How to Run a Successful Waste Management and Disposal Company

The waste industry is one of those industries that is always in demand. There will always be a mounting pile of waste from commercial and residential use, and that waste will always need to be gotten rid of. People have busy lives and don’t have the time or the equipment to deal with their waste.

This is why waste management can become a very successful and profitable business. However, much like any other business, if you want to constantly grow your waste management and disposal company, you need to be proactive with your decisions.

Here are a few tips to help you run this kind of business.

Define Your Niche

The waste industry is a huge industry, and it can be very generalized. One mistake some companies make is to try to cover every single service required. This usually means that something falls through the cracks.

It is far better to focus your attention on a specific niche and a unique selling point that sets your company apart from other waste removal companies.

In most places, there is a public waste removal service that is run by the government. This deals with general residential waste, up to a certain amount. This service is usually enough to tackle everyday accumulated waste. But there is still room for private waste management in the industry.

Look for opportunities in your local community and market. This means doing market research. Look at other waste management companies and see if there’s a gap in the market. You can also speak to potential customers and ask about their needs and how your company can fill them.

To define your niche, try to look for specific opportunities and markets. For example, you might specialize in disposing of medical or other dangerous waste that needs special treatment. You might specialize in renting large dumpsters to homeowners who are renovating or clearing out their homes. You might specialize in commercial waste, whether it’s general office waste, construction waste, or something more specific like food waste.

Working With Other Companies

One major niche that has been mentioned is business-to-business services. As well as having other businesses and companies as clients, you can also work with other businesses to further your services.

One example of this could be if you work in food waste disposal. This food waste needs to be collected, but it doesn’t end there. Some food waste can be composted and the compost then sold on to agricultural companies. Animal parts that would otherwise go to waste can be rendered down rather than thrown into a landfill and then used to manufacture other products. Cooking oil and grease can be used for animal feed or biofuel.

Even in this one example, you can see how multiple other industries can benefit from proper waste management. However, a lot of this requires other processes and sorting, so it’s a lot of work. Sometimes working with other waste management companies in a similar industry can help both businesses to progress.

Another example might be the construction industry. Construction work generates a huge amount of waste, but by linking up with contractors, you can find more opportunities to work. If a contractor recommends a certain waste management company (ideally yours), or is contracted to use your services on multiple projects, you can get consistent work out of the deal.

Look for opportunities to work with other companies. These relationships will be incredibly useful and will allow you to work more efficiently while taking on different projects and jobs.

Recycling and Proper Waste Management

The reason why the waste industry is so necessary is because waste management is an increasingly difficult problem. Waste is terrible for the environment, which is in turn terrible for humans. Some waste rots down and releases greenhouse gasses, while other waste just accumulates or leaches toxins into the nearby environment.

This means that, as a waste management company, you need an effective and appropriate way to deal with the waste. Depending on local government legislation, this could become a serious issue. Always do research into the best waste disposal methods for the type of waste that you deal with.

A lot of everyday office waste, for example, can be recycled and then reused. Scrap metal can also be recycled and is sometimes fairly valuable. Untreated wood can be broken down and either burnt or used as wood chips.

Some things, such as paint and other chemical goods, need to be disposed of in specific ways so they don’t damage the environment or pollute nearby land.

Again, there are different ways to deal with this problem. For example, you might not have the equipment or expertise to dispose of the waste, but you can still find a niche transporting waste from the client to a waste disposal facility.

Funding Your Company

While some businesses have low startup costs, waste management requires a hefty amount of investment before it can get going. You can’t just start disposing of waste alone, as you need to transport it and deal with it safely.

All of this means multiple employees, a lot of space, and a lot of equipment and vehicles for transportation. Even a small-scale waste management company that deals with office waste will need some infrastructure behind it.

The good news is that, because waste management is such a necessary niche that always needs to be filled, you should begin to earn money quite quickly. While you can finance your company using your personal funds, it’s often a more reasonable idea to either get a business loan from a bank or get someone to invest in your company.

No matter what financing option you choose, you will need a plan in place so you can prove that you can earn that money back and turn a profit. So write down exactly what you need the money for and why. Then write down how those investments will result in a profit and further growth for your business.

The Appropriate Equipment

One of the most significant expenses will be equipment. You can’t just shove trash in the back of a van and hope for the best. You need specialized vehicles designed to haul waste safely, as well as equipment to help you and your workers move the waste from place to place.

Depending on the type of waste you deal with, you might need different equipment. For example, cooking oil is a liquid, and is usually transported in tankers rather than an ordinary waste truck.

You also might use dumpsters or skips. You can hire these to clients and customers, then either empty them at certain times or take them back with you and deal with the waste.

Don’t forget about protective gear and equipment for your workers. This is especially important if you’re dealing with hazardous waste of some kind. If someone is injured on the job, it doesn’t just slow down the work, but it can lead to a costly court case if you’re found liable.

Finally, you need somewhere to store the waste. Logistics is often the most difficult part of waste management, but you can sometimes work with other companies to find solutions for this.

Organizing the Workflow and Employees

If logistics is so difficult, how can you make it easier for your companies and your employees? There are other tools that you can use to make sure that everything is organized properly, such  as waste hauling software.

First, waste management is often about scheduling. Your clients expect you at set times, so create a schedule that allows you to complete your rounds in plenty of time and even leave room for complications. Make sure that you’re transparent with your clients about when to expect you.

Time is money, so the more efficient you are, the more profitable your company will be. This is why it’s often better to stick to a specific area so that you can create a route that makes sense. Make sure that you have the equipment to handle the amount of waste you normally process or transport, as well as options if something goes wrong.

You will also need to successfully manage your employees. Even a small waste management company will often employ a few people. You need workers to deal with the waste itself, as well as staff who can handle the logistics and paperwork involved.

Consider outsourcing for specific skilled services, such as accounting or IT services. This keeps your costs down and makes sure that your company is using its resources efficiently.

It should come as no surprise that the most important thing to manage as a waste management company is waste. More specifically, making sure that time or money isn’t wasted. You want to be able to work leanly, but not so inflexibly that your company can’t handle any delays or setbacks.

All of this will ensure that you run a successful and profitable waste management company.
